LNG as a Future Ship Fuel

LNG is considered a promising transitional ship fuel because of environmental, technical and business economic considerations.

  • Technical feasibility : LNG propulsion technology is ready for application and has successfully been deployed on inland vessels since 2011
  • Environmental benefits: LNG causes substantially lower emissions of air pollutants, such as NO and particulate matters, than conventional diesel/marine gasoil.
  • Business economic impacts: LNG could reduce operational fuel costs thanks to long-term price differences when compared to diesel.

The Introduction of LNG Technology

The uptake of LNG technology in inland and coastal navigation is a complex process. It requires actions in various fields – from development of regulations and standards to infrastructure establishment and building of new ships. In order for the market introduction to be successful, these mutually dependent actions need to go hand in hand.

However, due to a lack of information on the status of actions in the different fields, both public administrations and shipping industry face substantial uncertainties. As a result, investment decisions may be significantly delayed, slowing down the entire transition process.

Project Database and Map

The aim of the LNG Project Database and Map is to reduce uncertainty in the transition process by providing a comprehensive overview of all relevant activities along the LNG chain for inland navigation and Wadden Sea shipping in Europe. The map displays implementation projects, platform initiatives and funding programmes. In addition to this, the database also contains information on studies, standards and regulations.

By increasing planning reliability for public and private decision-makers, the database and map contribute to a smooth introduction of LNG as a ship fuel. They might be extended in the future to also cover other areas of shipping as well as other modes of transport.
